When all I want is you

The full moon tonight, when I finally ventured outside for groceries.

The full moon tonight, when I finally ventured outside for groceries.

My silence has been mostly due to being sick as a dog, not once but twice, in the past three weeks in London.  I ended up getting a cold my first week back, sniffling like a fool at work, blowing my nose until it was red and raw.  Then I was literally only healthy and normal for about three or four whole days before being hit with the worst flu I have experienced for at least five years.  We’re talking full body aches and the hottest fever ever!  I was sweating like a maniac, and sleeping entire days away.  I’m still experiencing some symptoms (a horrendous cough), but at least tonight I had my first full and healthy home-cooked meal in a week.  I just had no appetite, energy or groceries.  Woe has definitely been me.

In the meantime, the UK and London had a snowpocalypse.  And by this, I mean they got a few inches of snow.  Brits just don’t handle it that well.  The whole city of London came to a screeching halt with tubes not running on schedule, people slipping and sliding on the sidewalk and others avoiding to drive at all.  It was all terribly laughable to me, as Ontario gets many feet of snow each year, and we rarely succumb to a snow day.  Clearly, when snow is involved, the Brits simply cannot “keep calm and carry on.”  Poor chaps.  All while my hometown was experiencing frigid temperatures of -20 degrees Celcius or less!

Despite the double whammy flu & cold, I did do some fun things since I got back to this side of the pond.  I went for the first time to the Brockley Market, the local farmer’s and shops market in my neighbourhood.  It was delicious!  I had myself a mouth-watering vegetarian burrito and grabbed some veggies (including broccoli :P ), bread and a slice of cake.  My last night of being well, I went with my friend Daniel to see the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta The Mikado at the English National Opera.  It was wonderful; such a funny show that I love seeing time and time again.  Then last night, I went to see a 50-year-old (no, none of the members are the originals) a capella group called The Swingle Singers with another friend and coursemate, Cathy.  I was stunned by the level of accuracy and sheer vocal talent from them and absolutely loved that they covered songs as well as created their own.  Simply beautiful to listen to.

Oh, and I should probably mention that I’ll be moving this week (UPDATE: now sometime this month).  Yep, I’m leaving my ugly residence room in Brockley in favour of an absolutely adorable flat literally two minutes from my university.  So, it’s in the New Cross part of London, has a DOUBLE bed, BATH, COUCH / living room area and a back garden!  I’ll be living with a fellow Canadian friend, Sebastian, and his female flatmate.  I think it will be much more of a home for me.  It is very bittersweet though, as I have to move out from some amazing floormates that I love dearly.  I just have to remember that it doesn’t mean the end and that they can come visit and even sleepover in my bigger bed! :D

*Also note: The window in my ugly room has STILL not been fixed.

Even though I have been moping in my room this whole past week, I need to focus on the positives here.  The major positive at the moment is that Eric is now in Canada!  My cutie-patootie boyfriend, who has been teaching in China this year, took three plane rides, taking nearly 24 hours to get back to our hometown, and will be visiting family and friends, and celebrating his Christmas for the next two weeks (well one more now).  THEN he will be flying to London to be with me for two whole weeks!  AAAAAHHHH! I cannot contain my excitement!  I haven’t seen him in FIVE MONTHS!  That’s now been 159 days, 20 hours…

Needless to say, I’m going crazy without him.  Every couple I see together infuriates me with a passion.  I cannot stand going on Facebook to see that another couple is moving in together or getting engaged; I wanna punch ‘em in the face.  What makes them so damn special that they have no obstacles?  Long-distance relationships blow, but I knew that well before getting into this.  I just have to keep thinking what this year will bring for us in the long-run, and that we are much stronger than other couples for doing this and making it work via Skype, which can be very glitchy at the best of times.  But whatever… I see him in 8 DAYS!!  The end is finally near, and to make it even more amazing than two weeks in the great and fabulous city of London… we’ll also be going to Amsterdam for the first time ever, for 5 days!!!!!!!  So many exclamation points are needed here, so don’t judge. Hahaha.

London is great and everything, but it’s been lacking one special person.

      • Ah Deptford. Worked there myself a few years ago… Such a shame that the redeveloped housing is so low spec… Thank the Gods for the Albany, though!

Looking forward to your Amsterdam posts.

  1. Great update Allison. Thanks for sharing. Long distance blows
9 years doing it here. But I am now engaged.it is all worth it.huggs

  2. Glad you enjoyed it, Cathie! It’s nice to be able to relate with other couples that are going through the same thing or have in the past. If a couple can survive long-distance like this, I honestly think they can survive almost anything.

  3. You have a fun blog style that I always enjoy reading… looking forward to hearing about your Amsterdam adventure! Hope you stay better now… (here comes the nurse in me… GET YOUR FLU SHOT!) :O)

    • Thanks :) Wasn’t too sure how my writing was… I think I’m writing this blog the way I talk. Amsterdam will be a riot and I will be sure to document everything! I am definitely feeling way better, but I am stubborn about getting the flu shot :P
